It’s 1950, and new colours are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. There’s just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover.

First Date - Koorliny Arts Centre

What does a person expect out of a blind date? The 2012 musical First Date takes the audience through the first meeting of Casey and Aaron, two 30-ish New York City singles set up by friends and family. The two have nothing in common: Aaron is a conservative banker, Jewish, and looking for a meaningful relationship, while Casey is an artist, a shiksa, and a little too funky for Wall Street. With the influences of their friends and family (played out in their imaginations) as well as the effects of social media (Google, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube personified), this first date seems to be doomed. But with the help of a meddling but well-meaning waiter, Casey and Aaron might make a connection after all. With a contemporary rock score, First Date gleefully pokes fun at the mishaps and mistakes of blind dates and gives hope that there could be that one perfect moment.

Julius Caesar - Roleystone Theatre

Caesar’s assassination is just the halfway point of Julius Caesar. The first part of the play leads to his death; the second portrays the consequences. As the action begins, Rome prepares for Caesar’s triumphal entrance. Brutus, Caesar’s friend and ally, fears that Caesar will become king, destroying the republic. Cassius and others convince Brutus to join a conspiracy to kill Caesar.

On the day of the assassination, Caesar plans to stay home at the urging of his wife, Calphurnia. A conspirator, Decius Brutus, persuades him to go to the Senate with the other conspirators and his friend, Mark Antony. At the Senate, the conspirators stab Caesar to death. Antony uses a funeral oration to turn the citizens of Rome against them. Brutus and Cassius escape as Antony joins forces with Octavius Caesar.

Encamped with their armies, Brutus and Cassius quarrel, then agree to march on Antony and Octavius. In the battle which follows, Cassius, misled by erroneous reports of loss, persuades a slave to kill him; Brutus’s army is defeated. Brutus commits suicide, praised by Antony as “the noblest Roman of them all.”

They are about the love of good literature. The play takes place over a twenty year period, beginning in 1949 when Helene Hanff first writes Marks & Co. and ends in 1969 with the death of Frank Doel, the delightfully dusty supplier of so many old volumes to Helen who has shown her gratitude through the years by sending "care packages" to the staff of Marks & Co.

A delightfully absurdist Victorian satire, Utopia, Limited depicts an imaginary island obsessed with British values and parodies the privatisation of public institutions, imperialism, and parliamentary peculiarities, with newspapers fixated on royal scandal.

The island kingdom of Utopia is ruled by King Paramount, a benign head of state covertly controlled by his powerful courtiers Scaphio and Phantis, and the constant threat of explosion.

Princess Zara, Paramount’s eldest daughter, having recently returned from many years at a British college, is keen to transform Utopia into a civilized society. Her English experts (the Flowers of Progress) advise all manner of Victorian Anglophile adoptions, from fashions and polite customs to the concept of persons as limited-liability entities, granting Utopians profits and personal immunity.

However, this disrupts the future plans of the courtiers, and they manage to convince the citizens of Utopia that the King is not to be trusted with his idealised actions to bring peace and prosperity to their island among the waves. Who will ultimately rule paradise?

Shrine - Darlington Theatre Players

A searing play about the way in which we try to own our dead, and the way in which they come to own us. A year after the death of their son Jack in an early-morning car crash, Adam and Mary Mansfield are still struggling with what happened. Adam has sold his winery, and his trips to the beach house have become more frequent – anything to avoid Mary’s silent suffering. One day he encounters a young woman he used to employ as a cellarhand. June knows her way around a vineyard, and she also knows a lot about Jack. It’s a story she needs to share with Adam, the story of his son’s final hours. Set above the rocky headlands of the south coast of Western Australia, between forest and sea, Tim Winton’s third play untangles a domestic heartbreak that has morphed into mythology, in a landscape inhabited by ghosts.

Note: This production contains strong language, sexual references and themes of road trauma and sexual assault.

Alice by Heart - Wanneroo Repertory Inc

When life starts to fade into a summery drowsy twilight, you should be taking things a little easier… But for Henry Preece, embarking on early retirement with his attractive wife, things start to go seriously wrong.

“All my life, I’ve either been looking back at happy times that have gone or looking forward to the happiness to come.” In Hugh Whitemore’s elegant and tantalising play, the mystery and excitement of an unexpected passion is given full rein, until Henry realises that the door he’s just flung open should have remained tightly shut.
